2024/5/9

On 8 May, Ambassador Misawa attended the launching event of “Rehabilitation of the Theatre of Stone Town (Zanzibar) the Majestic Cinema for Socio-economic development” hosted by UNESCO.
The Majestic Cinema is one of the oldest surviving cinemas in East Africa, first built in 1921 and rebuilt after a fire in 1954. UNESCO and its stakeholders launched the project to rehabilitate the historical cultural heritage and revitalise it as the tourism and cultural hub of the Zanzibar Islands. The Government of Japan supports the project through its financial contribution to UNESCO.
At the launching event, Ambassador Misawa introduced the idea of the Japanese proverb "By studying the old, we learn the new (Onko Chishin)" and emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage, expecting the Majestic Cinema to once again become the hub of socio-economic activity in Zanzibar.
