Ambassador Misawa attended the UNODC Southern Route Partnership Conference 2024

On 28 May, Ambassador Misawa attended the UNODC Southern Route Partnership Conference and delivered an opening speech and presentation on Japan's Western Indian Ocean Policy.
“Southern Route” is an Indian Ocean route for illicit drug trafficking from areas near Afghanistan to East and South Africa and Asia. The Southern Route Partnership Conference is an annual conference to promote coordination and cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking in the Indian Ocean.
This conference, funded by the Government of Japan under the UNODC’s project “Strengthening Maritime Security and the Rule of Law at Sea in Africa to maintain a Free and Open Maritime Space toward a Free and Open Indo-Pacific”, was held in Dar es Salaam and was attended by many practitioners mainly from East Africa.
Ambassador Misawa conveyed the message that maritime security in the Indian Ocean is crucial not only for African countries, but also for Japan, which relies heavily on international trade through the Indian Ocean route.
