Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendation Award for Ms. Frida M. Tomito, Director of Sakura Vision Tanzania (SVT)

The Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields, in order to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas. The Commendations also aim to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for the activities of the recipients.
This Japanese fiscal year 2020, the Commendations are awarded to 172 individuals and 65 groups (20 individuals and 11 groups reside in Japan, and 152 individuals and 54 groups reside overseas). From the United Republic of Tanzania, Ms. Frida M. Tomito, Director of Sakura Vision Tanzania (SVT), is one of the recipients. Ms. Tomito becomes the third Tanzanian and first Tanzanian woman to receive this commendation award.
Ms. Tomito’s contribution: Promotion of Mutual Understanding between Japan and Tanzania
In 1993, she started activities mainly for the liberation of poor women in Tanzania. In 2016, in collaboration with the late Sumiko Iwao, Professor Emeritus of Keio University and founder of Group Kilimanjaro Inc., they established "Sakura Girls' Secondary School" for the purpose of training female leaders in Tanzania and providing high-quality education focusing on science and mathematics. Prof. Iwao passed away on 11th January, 2018. Ever since, Ms. Frida Tomito has tirelessly carried forward Prof. Iwao’s philosophy.
As the Founder of the school's management organization -"Sakura Vision Tanzania" and the Chairperson of the School Management Board, she has always contributed to the good management and operation of the school. In addition, she has always accepted and welcomed Japanese dignitaries who visit the school. Moreover, she significantly contributes to the promotion of mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the United Republic of Tanzania by holding Japanese culture classes, accepting Japanese teachers, and actively conducting student exchange programs. Her contribution has helped in creating a friendship bridge between the two countries.
