- Water Supply Situation in Urban West Region in Zanzibar is poor and this includes the famous tourist attraction area of Stone Town. There is frequent occurrence of water leakage by aged and deteriorated pipelines. Unsatisfactory water supply whereby customers in large areas receive water less than 6 hours a day.
- Zanzibar Vision 2020 had set a goal of 100% access to safe water by 2020 but this has not yet been accomplished. Also, Water Sector Development Plan is to supply clean water to all consumers. This project is in line with the above development policy and sector plan in Zanzibar.
- The major aim of the project is to provide safe and stable water supply services in the project area through development and renewal of water supply facilities, thereby improving the living environment of the area by reducing possibility of infectious diseases such as cholera. The project area is the Urban West Region in Unguja Island which includes Welezo West Zone, Welezo High Zone and Migombani West Zone.
- In addition, this project falls under the TICAD7 agenda of “Achieving Human Security and SDGs Goals” since the provision of clean and safe water will improve people’s health and well-being.
