MEXT 2026

We are pleased to announce the opening of the 2026 MEXT Scholarship for Tanzanian nationals. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT) offers fully funded scholarships to Tanzanians who wish to pursue studies at Japanese universities/schools on a full-time basis.
 

[APPLICATION PERIOD]

Application deadlines vary depending on the programme.
Research applicants: 15 April 2025 – 20 May 2025 (Application must be received by the embassy by 4:30 p.m.)
Undergraduate/Specialized Training College applicants: 15 April 2025 – 30 May 2025 (Application must be received by the embassy by 4:30 p.m.)

[SELECTION PROCESS]

(1) Written exams
     - Research applicants: 30 June 2025 (subject to change)
     - Undergraduate and Specialized Training College applicants: 1 July 2025 (subject to change)
*Previous exam questions are available as a sample. It is strongly recommended that you prepare for the exam.

 

(2) Interview
     - Research applicants: 21 and 24 July 2025 (subject to change. There will be two interviews for research applicants).
     - Undergraduate and Specialized Training College applicants: 28 July 2025
*Only those selected for further consideration will be notified of the exact date and time. If you have not heard from us by the end of June, please consider your application unsuccessful.
**The Embassy of Japan in Tanzania only conducts the first screening of the application process. A recommendation from the Embassy does not guarantee that you will be selected as a MEXT grantee.
 

RESEARCH STUDENT

  • For students who wish to further their studies at a master’s or doctoral levels.
  • Applicants must be under the age of 35 (born on or after 2 April 1991) and have a bachelor’s degree (including prospective graduates) and have completed at least 16 years of schooling or have a relevant qualification.
  • Applicants are required to have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a 5.00 GPA scale (=7.0 on a 10.00 scale) in their latest degree.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT

  • For students who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree in either Natural Science (e.g. electrical, mechanical engineering, agriculture, medicine, etc) or Social Science (e.g. law, literature, economics, Japanese language, etc) at a Japanese university.
  • Applicants must be under the age of 25 (born on or after 2 April 2001) and have completed 12 years of school education or have a relevant qualification (includes prospective graduates).

SPECIALIZED TRAINING COLLEGE STUDENT

  • Students who wish to obtain a diploma (approximately equivalent to NTA Level 5 to 7) in various fields, such as engineering and architecture, after a one-year intensive Japanese course (all coursework will be conducted in Japanese).
  • Applicants must be under the age of 25 (born on or after April 2, 2001) and have completed 12 years of schooling or have a relevant qualification (includes prospective graduates).
