1. On 14th March 2025, in Dar es Salaam, the Exchange of Notes(E/N) for the grant aid project “The Project for the Improvement of Medical Equipment for Enhancing Maternal and Child Health Care Services” was signed by H.E. Mr. MIKAMI Yoichi, Ambassador-designate of Japan to the United Republic of Tanzania and Dr. Natu El-Maamry Mwamba, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance of the United Republic of Tanzania.

2. The Government of Japan will provide a grant up to one billion five hundred and twenty-seven million Japanese Yen (\1,527,000,000), approximately ten million nine hundred and eighty-five thousand US dollars ($10,985,000) for this project.

3. Although the maternal mortality rate has improved in the country and the infant and under-five mortality rates have also improved, the country remains vulnerable in terms of both hardware and software, such as facilities, equipment and medical referral systems, and the lack of timely provision of adequate testing and treatment for maternal health check-ups, childbirth and complications during pregnancy and delivery. This project aims to strengthen the diagnostic, testing and treatment systems for maternal and child health at the state level in Tanzania and improve access to health services by providing essential medical equipment in six state hospitals in mainland Tanzania and one hospital in Zanzibar and Unguja Island.

4. Over the years, Japan has supported the improvement of healthcare services in Tanzania through Grass-Roots Human Security Grant Assistance Projects and JICA technical cooperation projects. The ongoing technical cooperation ‘Project for Strengthening Quality Maternal and New-born Care in Tanzania’ (FY2022-2027) aims to improve maternal and child health service delivery capacity by strengthening the maternal and child health service delivery system in Regional Referral Hospitals (RRHs) and improving the capacity of health staff. The Regional Referral Hospitals (RRHs) receiving equipment under this project will also benefit from Japan’s ongoing Project for Strengthening Quality Maternal and New-born Care in Tanzania (FY2022-2027), creating a synergistic effect by enhancing service delivery and improving health staff capacity. The project will also contribute to improved governance and administrative services in the country by improving access to health services.
