>>Kyocera Donates Solar Power Systems to Schools in Tanzania
On 7th June, Ambassador Okada attended a donation ceremony of Solar Power Systems, which was held by Kyocera Corp. at Vumari Secondary School in Same District, Kilimanjaro.
Kyocera’s School Solar Power Systems installations are part of larger donation projects that have been ongoing since 2009, in which Kyocera has been providing solar power generating systems to schools in Tanzania and Uganda that have no access to the electricity grid.
This year, donation ceremonies were held at two schools representing four schools at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, including Vumari Secondary School in Tanzania. In Uganda, the ceremonies took place on 11 June at all three schools in Bushenyi.Kyocera representative, Mr. Youichi Higashi, Manager of the Business Planning Development in the Corporate Solar Energy Group said, ‘Students, teachers and people from the community gave us a very warm welcome with music and dances. In some recipient schools, the solar systems are occasionally used as an electricity source for the people of the community to charge their mobile devices, and revenues are used to buy school equipments.’ Mr. Higashi explained the importance of meeting the local needs in order for any projects to be sustainable.

The Vumari Secondary School is located approximately 30 minutes away by car from the nearest town. Most students walk more than ten kilometers to school. In rural areas, many female students struggle to continue their education because of safety concerns. The availability of the lightings at night provides a safer environment for some female students at Vumari, who live in the school dormitory.
