“Flyover, Oh Yeah!”
Support to the construction of Tanzania's first flyover at Tazara junction and Tanzanian efforts in poverty reduction
On June 18, 2013, in Dodoma, H.E. Mr. Masaki Okada, Ambassador of Japan to the United Republic of Tanzania, and Hon. Dr. William A. Mgimwa, Minister for Finance of the United Republic of Tanzania, exchanged the following two Notes, with the presence of Hon. Dr. John Pombe Magufuli, Minister for Works.
(1) The Grant Aid for the Project for Improvement of Tazara Intersection
(3.127 billion Japanese Yen, equivalent to approximately 52.5 billion Tanzanian Shillings)
This grant is for the construction of the first flyover in Tanzania for the Tazara Intersection known as one of the most congested junctions in Dar es Salaam.
(2) Japanese Yen Loan to support the co-financing for the Tenth Poverty Reduction Support Credit (PRSC-10)
(1.5 billion Japanese Yen, equivalent to approximately 25.2 billion Tanzanian Shillings.)
This assistance will be implemented in line with the General Budget Support (GBS) framework in Tanzania, aiming to further accelerate the Tanzanian Government’s efforts in poverty reduction and economic growth for the people in Tanzania.
During the signing ceremony in Dodoma, Minister Mgimwa highly commended Japan’s support through GBS provided by concessional loans. GBS is regarded as a preferred modality by the Government of Tanzania. Minister Magufuli thanked the people and government of Japan for its support to the construction of Tazara flyover which is a long-awaited project for the people of Tanzania. Minister Magufuli also reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with Japanese Government for an earliest reslution of traffic jams in Dar es Salaam. The Tazara flyover has attracted considerable attention in Tanzania. Minister Magufuli showed appreciation in Japanese ‘Arigatougozaimasu (meaning Asante sana)’ for Japan’s significant support to this long-awaited project. The ceremony reached a climax at its conclusion with Minister Magufuli's celebrating call, ‘Flyover, oh yeah!’
