    >>Official opening of Kilwa Road Phase II in Dar es Salaam

On February 23, 2013, the official opening ceremony of Kilwa Road II was held at Dar es Salaam. Two sets of exchange of notes concerning the grant aid for the project for widening of Kilwa Road were signed in June 2006 and September 2007 respectively. The Government of Japan provided a grant amounting 2.65 billion yen.

H.E. Dr. Mohamed Gharib Bilal, the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, the Hon. Dr. John P. Magufuli, Minister for Works, and other dignitaries from Tanzania and H.E. Mr. Masaki Okada, Ambassador of Japan attended the ceremony.

It is expected that the opening of Kilwa Road as one of essential industrial roads in Tanzania will not only contribute to vitalizing the economic activities, but also to alleviating the heavy traffic jams of the major commuter road to the city centre of Dar es Salaam. Needless to say, adequate road is one of the key element for economic growth and poverty reduction.

Despite its importance, the construction work of Kilwa Road has been subject to unforeseen problems, such as premature pavement failures, and unpredicted deterioration resulting from excessive traffic load and high temperatures. Japan and Tanzania established Joint Task Force (JTF) in June 2011 in order to achieve a mutually agreeable solution for Kilwa Road in a harmonious spirit, based on the friendship among TANROADS, Ingérosec and KAJIMA. The JTF conducted several meetings to discuss remedial measures, and approved the proposal by the contractor KAJIMA in December 2011.

KAJIMA started the road reconstruction works in May 2012, with careful quality control of Asphalt and Kerbstone by Ingérosec and TANROADS. In September 2012, the Hon. Dr. Magufuli, Minister of Works and Ambassador Okada visited Kilwa Road to inspect the construction works. KAJIMA successfully completed its obligation for the remedial works for the Project for Widening of Kilwa Road Phase II, and the road was handed over on 10th December 2012 after careful inspection by TANROADS and the Consultant Ingérosec.

Ambassador said in his speech, "I trust that proper maintenance will be upheld, to ensure that this road will continue to contribute to the betterment of Tanzanian people, now and in the future."
