"TANZANIA WILL BENEFIT MORE FROM NEW BAGAMOYO ROAD"

Opening Ceremony of Japanese Grant Project

On 1st October, 2014, H.E. Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania and H.E. Mr. Masaki Okada, Ambassador of Japan, celebrated the official opening ceremony for the Japanese grant project “THE PROJECT FOR WIDENING OF NEW BAGAMOYO ROAD" at Kawe junction along the Mwenge-Tegeta road in Dar es Salaam Region.

The Project for Widening of New Bagamoyo Road

    >Total Grant: 5.095 billion JPY (approx. 77.850 billion Tsh)

    >Length: 12.9 km

    >Construction Period: December 2010 - July 2014

Dar es Salaam city is the centre of the economy and transportation of Tanzania, and the starting point of all traffic systems, such as roads, railways, airports and port.

For quite a long time, Japan has been contributing to the relaxation of traffic congestion in Dar es Salaam, starting from the construction of Selander Bridge and the pavement of numerous roads in the city center. But, because of the rapid urban development along four trunk roads in Dar es Salaam, the traffic congestion has been worsening every year, hindering economic activities in the city.

In order to alleviate this situation, upon the request of the Tanzanian Government, the Governmen of Japan and the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania signed the Exchange of Notes to provide Grant from Japan to Tanzania in Febrary 2010, and the construction work started in December of the same year.

However, the implementation of this project has not been easy nor smooth. A number of issues emerged during the construction period, such as the record-breaking rainfall, which hit Dar es Salaam in December 2011 and caused much damage in many parts of the city, forced this project to change the bridge design at Lugalo. Now the Lugalo bridge have a substantially enhanced and flood-proof design and the whole construction of the New Bagamoyo Road is now highly resistant to harsh weather, as well as traffic conditions in the years to come.

Behind the success of this project, a lot of efforts were made from both the Japanese and the Tanzanian teams. During the ceremony, many guests of honor presented gratitude to the Government of Japan for the success of this project. The sentiments expressed are the result of the enhanced relationship between the two nations which comes from the cooperation and devotion of efforts by stakeholders of the two countries.

The area along the New Bagamoyo Road, where many factories and offices can be seen, is already one of the most important business and industrial areas in Dar es Salaam. The completion of the modernization work of the road will give the area's businesses and industrial sites additional benefits, as more factories and offices will be established along this road. In addition, an ambitious plan of developing a new Bagamoyo Port and adjacent Special Economic Zone is underway and this New Bagamoyo Road will greatly contribute to the connection between the largest economic center of Tanzania, namely Dar es Salaam, and the newly developed economic center of Bagamoyo, so that it will greatly contribute to the Tanzanian economy as a whole.
