    >>Exchange of notes related for three grant assistance projects

On January 25, Ambassador of Japan Masaki Okada and Minister for Finance of Tanzania William Augustao Mgimwa signed the exchange notes in Dar es Salaam for the following tree grant assistance projects.

    1. Improvement of Transport Capacity in Dar es Salaam (amoung of assitance 1,108 million yen)
    2. The Project for Improvement of Tazara Intersection (Detailed Design) (amount of assistance :64 million yen)
    3. Food Security Project for Underprivileged Farmers (amoung of assitance 308 million yen)

The outline of the three projects is as follows.

    1. Improvement of Transport Capacity in Dar es Salaam

The road earmarked for this project covers a 1.3 km section of Gerezani Road and Bandari Road between the Kamata and Kilwa intersections, and reconstruction of Gerezani Bridge; where a double-lane road will be laid out. This timely project will help lessen the existing traffic jams of Dar es Salaam and a widened road and bridge will certainly contribute to the economic development of Tanzania and promotion of forein direct investment.

    2. The Project for Improvement of Tazara Intersection (Detailed Design)

This Detailed Design covers a flyover for the Tazara Intersection where Nyerere Road crosses Nelson Mandela Road; a double-lane flyover will be laid out. The flyover, which many Tanzanians have been waiting for, will contribute to alleviating the existing traffic jams of Dar es Salaam as well as to strengthening the role of the Tanzanian road network as an international corridor connecting Dar es Salaam Port and the nearby land-locked countries.

    3. Food Security Project for Underprivileged Farmers

This Grant Aid aims at enabling the Tanzanian government to procure agricultural inputs such as fertilizer to increase food production, thereby contributing to stable food security in the country. We hope that this assistance will enhance agricultural productivity and income of underprivileged farmers.

Japan promised at TICAD IV held in May 2008, to strengthen its contribution to the infrastructure building and the agriculture and food sector in African countries. This project is a realization of our promise.
