“Fertilizer and Projects” Two effects from one support

Signing Ceremony of Exchange of Notes for Japanese Grant Project

On 31st March, 2014, the Government of Japan and the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania signed Exchange of Notes for the Japanese Grant Project “The food security project for underprivileged farmers”.

The food security project for underprivileged farmers

The grant which is provided from the Government of Japan amounts to three hundred and eighty million Japanese Yen (JPY380,000,000), approximately six billion ninety million Tanzanian Shillings (Tsh 6,061,000,000). (Exchange rate: 1 yen = 15.95 Tsh. 28 March, 2015)

This project aims to improve food production, especially for underprivileged farmers, and its ultimate goal is to enhance food security in Tanzania. The grant is provided to the Government of Tanzania for procurement of fertilizer. After the procurement, the fertilizer will be supplied to farmers through private companies.

This project is not only to provide fertilizer but also has another effect. The income derived from the sale of the fertilizer can make it possible for the Government of Tanzania to support agricultural development and poverty alleviation by providing infrastructure or access to financial opportunities for underprivileged farmers.

We believe that this project will help Tanzania get even closer to achieving its goals as set out in “Kilimo Kwanza”.

This project is also being supported by several other projects which Japan have launched already or will launch in the future. Because farming is highly dependent on unreliable factors, such as climate and weather, adding fertilizer to farmland or other efforts to improve their productivity, is a risky investment. In this regard, irrigation is indispensable for the development of the agricultural industry and the Government of Japan is supporting its construction and maintenance through financial assistance and capacity building of farmers and officers.

    H. E. Mr. Masaki Okada, Ambassador of Japan(Right), and Dr. Servacius B.
