“ New fish market at Zanzibar ”

Signing Ceremony of Exchange of Notes for Japanese Grant Project

On 11th March, 2014, the Government of Japan signed Exchange of Notes for the purpose of implementing “The Project for Development of Malindi Fish Landing and Marketing Facilities in Zanzibar”.

The Project for Development of Malindi Fish Landing and Marketing Facilities in Zanzibar

In line with “Zanzibar Development Vision 2020”and “MKUZAII”, the Zanzibar Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty 2010 – 2015, the Government of Japan has decided to provide a grant up to nine hundred and thirty-five million Japanese Yen (JPY 935,000,000), nearly 14 billion 9 hundred Tanzanian Shillings (Tsh 14,773,000,000), to the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania in order to improve one of the bottlenecks in the fisheries industry, namely insufficient infrastructure for distributing fish products to consumers. (Exchange rate: 1 yen = 15.8 Tsh. 7 March, 2014)

Though fishing is one of the most important industries in Zanzibar, which creates 6 % of GDP and supplies more than 80% of animal protein intake in the country, almost 10% of the fish remain unsold and deteriorates under the scorching sun. Furthermore, lack of proper landing and preserving facilities make sanitary conditions far from adequate.

In order to improve these conditions, The Government of Japan will reconstruct the landing quay to ensure safe landing for fishing boats, construct a fish market and provide equipment which will create an efficient work environment and hygienic place for more than 6,000 users. The Government of Japan will also provide soft-component support such as management though training programmes, without which the project may result in failure.

By implementing those components, this project will greatly contribute to the stable supply of better quality fish to the people of Zanzibar.
