Bilateral Relations

 

Japan recognized Tanzania when it declared independence in December 1961, and opened it’s diplomatic mission in Tanzania in 1966. Tanzanian Embassy was established in Tokyo in 1970. Since the independence, both countries have enjoyed cordial relationships between them.

 

Regarding V.I.P visits, the then Crown Prince and Crown Princess visited Tanzania in 1983, the then Minister for Health and Welfare Junichiro Koizumi in 1997, Prince Takamado and Princess Takamado in 1999, the then Senior Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Tetsuro Yano in 2003, Senior Vice Minister for Finance Kazunori Tanaka in 2007, and Minister for Foreign Affairs Masahiko Koumura in 2008.  From Tanzania, including the Founding Father of Tanzania, Mwalimu Nyerere’s state visit in 1981, all Presidents visited Japan. President Kikwete and the First Lady visited Japan from October to November 2006. Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Membe visited Japan in May 2007. President Kikwete participated in the TICADIV in May, which was held in Yokohama, Japan as well as the outreach meeting of G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit in Japan that year.
